Admission

Applicants should have completed their undergraduate work in an accredited program and earned a B.S.E. or equivalent degree in a field relevant to Mechanical Engineering.

Doctor of Philosophy

Admission

Applicants usually have completed an M.S.E. or equivalent degree. Outstanding students with only an undergraduate degree are also considered for direct Ph.D. admission. One or more previous degrees should be relevant to Mechanical Engineering.

Registration Requirement

For Direct Ph.D. students (i.e. studentts admitted without a relevant Master's degree), it is necessary to complete all of the academic requirements for the Master's degree. Coursework requirements beyond the Master's Degree:
  • At least 6 credits of letter-graded (including the grade S-Satisfactory) graduate coursework registered as a Rackham student while in residence on the Ann Arbor campus. Courses elected as visit (audit) do not meet this requirement, nor do ME990 and ME995.
    • Of the 6 letter-graded credits, 4 credits must be cognate. The cognate credits taken during the Master's degree complete this requirement.
For Ph.D. students entering with a Master's degree:
  • At least 18 credits of letter-graded (including the grade S-Satisfactory) graduate coursework registered as a Rackham student while in residence on the Ann Arbor campus. Courses elected as visit (audit) do not meet this requirement, nor do ME990 and ME995.
    • Of the 18 letter-graded credits, 4 credits must be cognate. The cognate requirement may be satisfied by having completed a Master's degree which included a cognate component. In this case, the coursework must have been completed within 5 years prior to admission to the Doctoral program and will not count toward the 18 letter-graded graduate level credits.

A minimum of 9 credit hours from list of Graduate Core Curriculum courses

Pre-Candidacy Examinations

  • (1) Research Core Curriculum consists of four 500+ level graduate courses that satisfy certain course distribution requirements (see ME Graduate Handbook "Qualifying Examinations" section for details). The RCC process must begin upon entry to the Ph.D. program. The grades students receive in RCC courses will be averaged to determine an RCC GP; and
  • (2) Research Fundamental Examination — a research presentation and examination.

Post-Candidacy Examination

The Dissertation Proposal Examination is an in-depth oral examination in the proposed area of research. The student's Dissertation Committee must approve the proposal.
